This thesis focuses on assessing the potential for the agricultural sector to produce renewable energy in three selected communities of South Tyrol, north Italy. It studies the technical potential, viable business models and the social and political dimension of future renewable energy installations in areas of these communities that are currently used for agriculture. The communities are three representative municipalities for different sizes, population densities and agricultural types. All communities are located within the same administrative region of the autonomous province of Bolzano (South Tyrol) and have typical agricultural activities for their altitudes. The first selected municipality is Bolzano (52 km 2 , 107,900 inhabitants, 262 m.a.s.l.), capital city of the region with typical peri-urban agriculture. The second chosen municipality is a low-lying village, Salorno (33 km 2 , 3,820 inhabitants, 224 m.a.s.l.) and the third is the most vast and high-lying municipality of the province with 302 km 2 , Sarentino (7,110 inhabitants, 967 m.a.s.l.).

ENERGY INCLUSIVE HOUSING SOLUTION USING A HYBRID DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEM

This research is an analysis of the technical, economic, social and legal aspects of the establishment of a local district heating (DH) cooperative in a new residential area in Meerstad, a neighbourhood of Groningen, the Netherlands. The presented design is a hybrid district heating system that uses DH stations and a microgrid powered predominantly by residential photovoltaic (PV). This DH units basically consist of heat pumps and large scale boilers. The objective was to estimate the surplus electricity that can be produced from residential houses in order to power the heat pumps. For this purpose, a microgrid was designed with a static model. Different scenarios are presented, where the efficiency of the heat pumps and the photovoltaic design varies. In the best case, with high efficiency heat pumps and PV panels, a surplus of 13,816 MWh per year was calculated that covers 69 percent of the heat pump’s consumption. In the worst case, with low efficiency heat pumps and PV panels, a coverage of 49 percent was calculated. Thus the results indicate that it is technically feasible to implement the proposed solution.

I analyzed social, geographical and infrastructural aspects of the capital city of Mongolia. The research through cartography allowed me to identify ecological issues in order to propose strategies that represent a step towards an improvement of the city’s living conditions and decrease of its environmental impact.
